About Us

The Phoenix Ukulele Group is a community of ukulele enthusiasts in Phoenix, AZ. Whether you just bought your first ukulele, dusted off an old one that was sitting around, or have been playing for years, this is a friendly, relaxed space to make music with others.

Here is everything you need to know to get started:

What We Do

  • In-Person Jams: We meet twice a month (frequently at the Foothills Library in Glendale) for group play-alongs. It is a casual, low-pressure environment where everyone plays and sings together.
  • Online Open Mics: We hold twice-monthly Zoom sessions so you can join in, lead a song, or just play along quietly from the comfort of home with your microphone muted while you get the hang of things. It’s common for us to have people who aren’t local to Phoenix to join us for some fun playing!

What to Expect as a Beginner

  • No Auditions or Pressure: The group focuses on inclusive group play-alongs rather than strict formal instruction. You do not need to memorize songs or play perfectly.
  • Huge Digital Song Library: Members get access to a digital collection of thousands of chord charts. Songs are displayed or shared digitally, showing you the chords and lyrics side-by-side.
  • Play at Your Own Pace: If a song has a tricky new chord, you can simply strum on the beats you know, single-strum on the chord changes, or just sit back and listen until you feel comfortable jumping back in.

Who Leads the Group?

The group is organized and led by Dee Holmes, with Carmelo Walsh leading sessions when Dee is away. Both are dedicated to keeping the environment welcoming, encouraging, and easy for players of all skill levels to join in.

Bring your ukulele, a music stand or tablet if you have one (we project on the big screen), and come strum along with us!
